PHA straws have been gradually used in the catering industry as a quality alternative to paper straws. From the brand, based on some reports in the market, we learnt that Starbucks has promoted the use of PHA straws in some of its shops. This is part of Starbucks’ global plastic reduction programme and applies to cold beverages in shops. In addition to this, McDonald’s shops in Europe, in order to comply with the EU’s single-use plastic ban, have partnered with a biomaterials company and have also rolled out home compostable straws in their shops located in Europe.

Both brands are still in the pilot phase and have not asked all shops to make the replacement. In contrast, US-based fast food chain Sweetgreen is using PHA straws across the board, which is an important part of the brand’s sustainable packaging strategy. From these cases, we can see that mainstream restaurant chain brands have been gradually accepting PHA straws.
