Chapter 4: Market Applications and Business Cases
In order to let more readers or potential consumers understand the market situation and the actual application scenarios of marine biodegradable straws, we will share specific business cases and market feedback of PHA straws in this chapter. We believe this chapter will bring you more inspiration.
Catering Industry Pioneer
PHA straws have been gradually used in the catering industry as a quality alternative to paper straws. From the brand, based on some reports in the market, we learnt that Starbucks has promoted the use of PHA straws in some of its shops. This is part of Starbucks’ global plastic reduction programme and applies to cold beverages in shops. In addition to this, McDonald’s shops in Europe, in order to comply with the EU’s single-use plastic ban, have partnered with a biomaterials company and have also rolled out home compostable straws in their shops located in Europe.
Both brands are still in the pilot phase and have not asked all shops to make the replacement. In contrast, US-based fast food chain Sweetgreen is using PHA straws across the board, which is an important part of the brand’s sustainable packaging strategy. From these cases, we can see that mainstream restaurant chain brands have been gradually accepting PHA straws.
From a regional perspective, PHA straws are more readily accepted in seaside areas, such as Hawaii. Hawaii mainly focuses on tourism and attracts millions of tourists all year round. Therefore, the protection of marine ecology is a top priority of the local environmental policy. Beginning with the full implementation of the plastic ban in 2022, local businesses have adopted biodegradable alternatives, with some restaurants using home compostable straws, such as local brand Mana Up Restaurant. By banning single-use plastic products, it is reported that beach pollution complaints have been reduced by two-thirds.
In addition to brands taking the initiative to assume social responsibility and actively making their own contribution to environmental protection, we can find that the promotion of policies also plays an indispensable role in this, and the relevant policies can enable more enterprises to join in environmental protection.
Policy-driven
In recent years, policies in almost every country have strongly supported businesses and consumers in switching from traditional single-use plastics to fully biodegradable, bio-based materials, including, of course, PHAs.The European Union issued the SUP Directive in 2019, which banned the sale of single-use plastics such as straw cutlery in the EU market and encouraged the use of alternatives such as PHA materials. Four years later, the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) was released, requiring all packaging to be recyclable or biodegradable within seven years, with materials such as PHA listed as a priority.
The U.S. is also keeping pace with environmental protection, from state-level plastic bans to the Biden Biotechnology Executive Order to the USDA BioPreferred Initiative, which expresses similar requirements, i.e., banning single-use plastic straws and allocating funds to support or certify PHA products as ‘biobased preferred purchasing’ objects.
Among Asian countries, Japan has launched a national strategy on bioplastics, with PHAs prioritised in the Bioplastics Roadmap. The Green Procurement Law requires government agencies to prioritise the procurement of PHA products. China, as a responsible country, even as early as 2020, explicitly allowed PHA as a substitute for plastics, and funded the construction of PHA production lines by companies such as Blue Crystal Microbials.
Of course, many other countries are also implementing corresponding initiatives, and there will be more upstream and downstream industries will flourish under the encouragement of the policy.

Consumer Awareness
Despite the gradual acceptance and promotion of marine biodegradable straws in the marketplace and in policy, we’re still curious about what consumers think. How do they feel about PHA straws?
Since PHA straws cost nearly 10 times more than plastic straws, this leads to a great deal of hesitation on the part of consumers to actually purchase them. According to the 2023 survey, only 25% of respondents would be willing to purchase a disposable PHA product in the long term. This sounds a bit frustrating, but government subsidies can have a positive effect. For example, the Hainan Provincial Department of Ecology and Environment reported in the same year that government subsidies lowered the purchase price of marine biodegradable straws, and consumer willingness to buy increased to nearly 65 per cent.
The good news is that consumer awareness of environmental protection has risen considerably over the years. Data shows that nearly 70% of European and American consumers are willing to pay extra for biodegradable packaging such as PHA products. And in Asia, Generation Z’s acceptance of products such as home compostable straws is nearly 80 per cent.
One direction we need to work on is to continue to raise consumer awareness of biodegradability, including the differences between PLA and PHA, why choose PHA, and how to properly handle biodegradable products.
Chapter 5: Challenges and Solutions
We have described in the above section what PHA is, the advantages of PHA, and how PHA is in the market. On the other side, we are still facing some challenges. But at the same time, we will have solutions accordingly.
Cost Barriers
As we mentioned above, PHA is produced by microbial fermentation and the manufacturing process of home compostable straws is not very different from that of plastic straws, so why is the cost difference so big?
The reason is that the current global production capacity of PHA is limited, the production technology is not mature enough, and the fermentation conversion rate is only less than 50%, which leads to the production cost is already 5-10 times higher than the traditional plastic. This also directly leads to many catering companies can not afford this part of the cost, can only fall back on paper straws or continue to use plastic straws.
To counter this, there are two main options to address the situation. The first is to optimise strains and expand production capacity; Genomatica has already increased conversion rates to 80% through synthetic biology. There are companies in the US and China that are expanding their production plants, with hopes of reducing the cost of PHA this year. Second, governments, especially in China, the U.S. and the European Union, have strongly supported companies in researching and developing PHA, and have provided subsidies and tax incentives to reduce the risk of investment and enhance the development information of companies.
Our company works closely with PHA producers and has first-hand production resources of PHA. Our marine biodegradable straws will also reduce costs as much as possible under the premise of quality assurance to provide consumers with more quality choices.
Inadequate recycling and degradation facilities
PHA straws, like other biodegradable bio-based materials, face the problem of inadequate recycling and degradation facilities. For faster degradation, home compostable straws need industrial composting conditions of 50°C-60°C. As of today, about 20 per cent of the world’s cities have industrial composting facilities, but this is clearly not enough.
In response to this situation, both governments and companies are already making preparations. The European Union, by strengthening the co-operation between government and enterprises, plans to add 500 new industrial composting plants this year, which should focus on processing biodegradable materials such as PHA.
Happily, our marine biodegradable straws, apart from industrial composting, can likewise be composted at home and degraded in the ocean, which greatly simplifies the recycling process and reduces marine pollution. This will also alleviate the problem of inadequate recycling and degradation facilities to a certain extent.

Chapter 6: Future Outlook – Market Trends for PHA Straws
As a new biodegradable plastic product after PLA straws, biodegradable PHA drinking straws will see an explosive growth in the next 5-10 years.
Market Forecast
According to the environmental protection policies continuously introduced by governments and the positive response of brands, we can think of the future market of PHA straws is all-round favourable. According to the report of professional research institutions, from 2023 to 2030, the global degradation market size will rise sharply from 0.8 billion US dollars to 1.5 billion US dollars, and the compound annual growth rate will rise to 35% after 5 years.
PHA straws currently account for only 5% of the biodegradable straws market, and its share will rise by 20% after 5 years. So, although the cost is high now, it is still a high return investment if you can capture market share and consumer mindset in advance. Surprisingly, the Asia-Pacific region will be the largest market in the future, most likely accounting for nearly half of global demand. As a manufacturer in China, we are likely to receive more government support and cost reductions for mass production of home compostable straws. This is one of the reasons for choosing us as a stable supplier.
In addition to the overall market forecast, we have also learnt more about the direction of PHA application expansion, which will be an area of continuous refinement for us. Firstly, PHA can be used in the maternal and child and medical fields to make non-toxic and heat-resistant baby bottle straws or medical straws. It can also be used in outdoor and sports brands to help create a more nature-friendly brand image. Secondly, PHA can be used in the aviation and hospitality industries, where we offer a wide range of customisation and packaging options, as well as exclusive customisation services to produce products that are unique to our customers, in order to meet the different needs of specific scenarios.
Integration of Circular Economy
Circular economy integration refers to the integration of the whole life cycle of a product from design, production, consumption to recycling into a closed-loop system, so as to achieve the unity of economic, environmental and social benefits through the efficient use of resources, the minimisation of waste and the recycling of materials. For biodegradable PHA drinking straws, it is necessary to achieve circular economy integration from the following aspects.
- Meet the sustainable procurement of bio-based raw materials. Microbial fermentation relies on raw materials such as waste cooking oil, bagasse, etc. as much as possible to reduce the reliance on food crops.
- Drive microbial fermentation through renewable energy sources such as solar and biogas to minimise carbon emissions. There are already PHA factories in China that use green processes to reduce energy consumption and recycle wastewater.
- Establish an effective closed-loop recycling system on the consumer side as soon as possible, such as dedicated collection channels. Alternatively, increase the recycling rate by incentivising consumers.
- Set up a composting system to efficiently degrade PHA straws, or decompose them in the natural environment, and the compost can be used to feed agriculture. Ultimately, a circular economy is achieved and resources are used efficiently.
Under such a model, not only can we solve the problem of plastic pollution, but we can also turn waste into new materials, killing two birds with one stone. Throughout the process, we as a producer will work with the government to promote the construction of supporting facilities and the unification of industrial standards. At the same time, we will also provide customers and consumers with more relevant counselling and advice to help consumers understand more and more about PHA materials and PHA products.

Conclusion: PHA Straws – The Big Revolution Behind Small Straws
Although this is just an inconspicuous PHA straw, behind it is the pursuit of environmental protection and the responsibility of mankind for sustainable development. In the near future, this small straw will not only be a promoter of accelerating the end of plastic pollution, but also a witness to the perfect combination of biotechnology and environmental protection concepts. However, in this process, it needs the cooperation of enterprises, government and consumers to make marine biodegradable straws more popular and win the battle of environmental protection together.
For enterprises, as we have been doing. Enterprises should be innovative, increase the research and development of PHA. Thus can PHA production process, to achieve the goal of reducing costs, making PHA straws more competitive in the market. And, as an enterprise that actively takes social responsibility, it should take the initiative to reduce single-use plastic products in the whole production process and enterprise management. Continuously develop and innovate alternatives to traditional plastics and become a pioneer in promoting green transformation.
For the government, it should play a guiding role. In addition to discussing and formulating policies to support the development of the PHA industry, it is also necessary to strengthen publicity and raise awareness of PHA among the general public. In terms of tax incentives, R&D subsidies and environmental regulations, it should create a development environment for enterprises and favourable conditions for the large-scale application of PHA.
And most importantly, for consumers, who are the backbone of this change. While establishing the concept of green consumption, should take the initiative to choose PHA products as far as possible. Because biodegradable PHA drinking straws are not only a substitute for plastic straws, but also one of the symbols of reconciliation between mankind and nature. Support the environmental cause with action. Every consumption is a vote, and our choices will determine the future shape of the planet.
The popularity of PHA straws cannot be achieved overnight; it is a long-lasting battle for the future of mankind. We hope that through the joint efforts of enterprises, governments and consumers, the promotion and application of home compostable straws can be accelerated, leaving a blue sky and blue sea and a sustainable and beautiful home for future generations.
